Anthony F. Noto

January 28, 1920 ~ February 9, 2018 (age 98)

Anthony F. Noto, 98, of Easton, PA, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 at Country Meadows Bethlehem Nursing Center.

Anthony was born on January 28, 1920 in Easton, PA, a son of the late Francesco and Calogera “Carrie” (Mattina) Noto.

Anthony was married to the former Janet M. Howells. From the age of three to six he lived in the small Sicilian hilltop town of Motta D’Affermo where his father was born and where he had returned to his ailing mother. Anthony was a graduate of Easton High School, class of 1937. The valedictorian of his class, he was awarded a full four-year scholarship to Lafayette College from which he graduated in 1941, Summa Cum Laude and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He began teaching English at the Easton High School in September 1941, but early in 1942 he was drafted for service with the US Army. Anthony was inducted at Ft. Meade, MD on February 17, 1942. He was not to set foot home again until October 27, 1945, the day after he was honorably discharged at Camp Atterbury, IN. He saw duty in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Through the years he stayed in contact with war-time friends in Australia, revisiting that country in 1961 and again in 1980. Anthony resumed teaching English at Easton High School late in November 1945, retiring in 1972. From 1965-1971 he served as chairman of the English Department. In 1984 he was designated as the Easton High School Day Honoree. From 1975-1979 he was employed by the School of Education of Lehigh University, his primary assignment was supervising intern teachers.

Anthony was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, Order of the Sons of Italy and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters Liboria “Bebe” Hoffmeier and Mary M. Miller, nieces and nephews as well as grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by two brothers Philip J. Noto and S. Charles Noto, and a sister Sarah Arcadipane.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with an additional calling hour on Tuesday from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm in Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1:30 pm in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 9th & Washington Streets, Easton, PA. Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Williams Twp. Online condolences may be offered at
