Obituary

Donald G. Detweiler, Jr, 72, of Palmer Twp., passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Muhlenberg, with his family by his side after a short but hard-fought battle from cancer. Born in Easton on December 6, 1950, he was a son of the late Edith (Rose) and Donald G. Detweiler, Sr. He graduated from Easton High School and enlisted in the United States Airforce for eight years. Upon his honorable discharge, Don became employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mailman. He was known as "Harpo" at the post office. He proudly delivered mail to the Easton and Palmer Township areas for 37 years until he retired in 2016. Don drove over 1 million miles and earned an award from the post office for his remarkable accomplishment. He also worked part time at Lowe's after his retirement.

Donald was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church where he was very involved with the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. One of his greatest accomplishments was becoming a Catholic in 2018 with the help of his friend/sister, Kelly Dee. He and his wife, Joyce loved going to the "OC" MD each summer and also visiting his family-in-law in Arizona.

He loved sports especially basketball, baseball and golf. He coached both baseball and basketball for local leagues. His greatest coaching experience was getting to coach his son,Todd in baseball from the time he was in little league until he finished high school. Donald loved to watch his granddaughter, Vanessa, play volleyball and his grandsons, Evan and Lucas, play soccer. He was an all-Philly fan, especially the Eagles. He was an avid University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan. Don and his lifelong friend, Michael E. actually visited the university.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Joyce Speciale-Detweiler; daughter, Gretchen; son, Todd and his partner, Natasha; grandchildren, Vanessa, Evan, and Lucas; brother-in-law, Vinny and his wife, Linda; nephews, Jeff and his wife, Steph; Greg and his wife, Tammy; Chris and his wife, Rae; niece, Keri and her husband, Don; great nieces, Stella, Libby; great nephew, Ryker; sisters, Margie, Caroline, and Cathi.
