Obituary

Helen Angelina Gonzalez, 90, of Easton, PA joined the Lord on May 22, 2023 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen was born in Shenandoah, PA on March 16, 1933 to the late Rufino and Helen (Nagy) Gonzalez. She spent her childhood in Easton tagging along to the coal yard with her father and playing with friends on Butler Street. When she was older, she enjoyed dancing at the local church hall, "The Saints," on Sunday nights.

She met her husband, Peter Gonzalez, at The Saints when she was 17. She fondly recounts his "sexy walk" and how he was the best dancer there and chose to dance with her. After that night, they only had eyes for each other. She and Pete wed on May 2, 1954, celebrating their 69th anniversary this year.

Professionally, Helen worked as a secretary for WE Hutton for fifteen years and as the secretary to the financial director of Easton Hospital for over a decade. She was praised for her skills as a typist, both at work and for her daughter and future son-in-law's term papers.

She was enthusiastically involved in her church community—two-term president of the Sacred Heart Sodality, treasurer for over a decade, and an active member of the Mother Cabrini Society. Helen was awarded Woman of the Year at St. Anthony's Church, and volunteered at St. Anthony's in many other capacities. She was also a lifetime member of the Palmer School PTA.

Helen was a people person. She befriended everyone she encountered. Always willing to offer a listening ear and eager to chat about her family.

Devoted mother, doting grandmother, adoring wife, caring friend. Being a grandmother was Helen's proudest accomplishment only second to being a mother. Her life revolved around her daughter and grandchildren. She boasted about them every chance she got. We found a calendar torn off she had saved with the following quote, "Grandparenting is like a swan song. It's your last official family role. It's your gift to the world." Helen spent decades fighting multiple chronic diseases and health issues in order to spend more time with her family.

In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her daughter, Jayne Lenzo and husband Frank; her grandchildren, Angela Donahue and her husband Matthew, Jessica Diamond and her husband Gregory, Courtney Lenzo and her partner Will Kavanagh, and Joseph Lenzo; and her sister, Jean Loccarini. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufino and Helen, and her sister Liz (Case) Necessary.
