James J. Smith, 90, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014 in St. Lukes Warren Hospital. Born: James was born in Phillipsburg, NJ, a son of the late Hugh and Mary (Halley) Smith. Personal: James was married to the former Frances Merlo, before her passing in 2013. He was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Philipsburg, NJ, before retiring in 1977. James was a graduate of St. Phillips & St James Catholic High School, class of 1941. He served in the US Army during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal, serving in the European Theatre of Operations in the following battles and campaigns: Ardennes (Battle of Bulge), Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. Memberships: James was a member of St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans of Warren County, and Military Order of the Purple Heart. Survivors: James is survived by a son James T. Smith of Phillipsburg, NJ; and a sister Elizabeth Pesarasi of Alpha, NJ. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a sister Rita Edwards; brothers John H. Smith and Hugh T. Smith. Services: Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and also on Saturday from 8:00 am to 9:00 am in Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, NJ.
