Name: Rev. Dr. Joachim Joseph Bakey (Father Joe), 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 1, 2014 in his home in Easton, PA surrounded by family. Born: Born John Bakey in Philadelphia PA, he was raised in Camden NJ, the son of John Bakey and Lillian Lamoureux Bakey. He chose the name Joachim Joseph after his ordination into the Catholic priesthood. Personal: Father Joe was ordained a Catholic priest in the Franciscan Order in 1955, receiving a papal dispensation in 1972. He then began a new life, marrying his wife, Laura Elizabeth Owens, in 1972, with whom he had three loving children. He was ordained an Episcopal priest and served primarily at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Philipsburg, NJ and St. Marks in Moscow, PA. He identified with both the Catholic and Episcopal churches throughout his life. He was a voracious reader and avid learner and along the way obtained several degrees including a D.Min in Theology, and masters degrees in social work and religious education. He felt that his most important work was in raising his three children. Memberships: He was an active member in the AA community and proud to be sober for 42 years. He was happy to sponsor and encourage many wonderful members. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Laura Bakey, and his three adult children: Cate, Jean and Dan Bakey. His brother, Christopher Bakey, of Barrington NJ, also survives him along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, George Bakey, of Collingswood, NJ.
