Deacon John Anthony Hanni, 83, formally of Easton, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, while in the embrace of his loving wife, Charlotte in Scranton, PA. Born on February 16, 1940 in Easton, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph James and Mazel (Jabour) Hanni.
Deacon Hanni was very proud to be in the first graduating class of Notre Dame High School Green Pond in 1958. He served as the first Student Body President. Deacon Hanni earned his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Villanova in 1962. In 1965, he married the love of his life, Charlotte (Matta). He worked as the Chief Financial Officer for Molded Acoustical Products of Easton, Inc. until his retirement in 1995.
On May 20, 2000, Deacon Hanni strengthened his Catholic faith and was ordained by the Allentown Diocese. He served as a permanent deacon in the Allentown area until he moved to Scranton to be closer to his children. He continued his service as a deacon in the Scranton Diocese. He was honored to perform his pastoral duties, especially distributing the Blessed Sacrament to those that were homebound and sitting in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament so that it remained available for others to adore.
In addition to his wife, Charlotte, Deacon Hanni is survived by his sons, John Anthony Hanni, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca of Pittsburgh, PA; Joseph Peter Hanni and his wife, Nicole of Dunmore, PA; William Eric Hanni and his wife, Sara of Springfield, VA; daughter, Lisa Ann VanWert and her husband, Earl of Clark Summit, PA; grandchildren, Victoria, Maria, Sophia, Sam, Louis, William, and Mazel Hanni; Anna and Meghan VanWert.
Deacon Hanni was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Hanni and his grandson, Michael Hanni.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, March 5, 2023 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm in Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 55 South 4 th Street, Easton, PA. The Prayer of the Incense will be held on Sunday at 7:30 pm in Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church. An additional calling hour will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023 from 9:15 am until 10:15 am in St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, 4049 Hartley Avenue, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, William Penn Hwy, Palmer Twp. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp.) Memorial contributions may be made in Deacon Hanni's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
