Joseph M. Nunes passed away peacefully in his home in Palmer Township on January 20, 2025. He was the husband of the late Eleanor C. (Lomonski) Nunes for over 50 years. He was born on May 7, 1931 in Easton PA to the late Armando T. and Lena (Casella) Nunes. Joe was a 1949 graduate of Easton High School. He was a star athlete, lettering in track and field and in football, in which he played offense and defense.
After high school, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably during the Korean Conflict on the USS Mercury in the 6th fleet. During his time in the Navy, he met Bethlehem native, Eleanor C. Lomonski, whom he would later marry in 1955. Joe and Ellie had three children: Deborah A., Nina M. and Joseph A. After his service to our country, Joe entered Moravian College (now Moravian University) where he majored in Chemistry. He was a member of the Omicron Gamma Omega (OGO) fraternity. He graduated in 1959 with BA in Chemistry.
Following college graduation, Joe went to work in Easton for C.K. Williams which later became Pfizer Inc. MPM Division and then Harcross Chemicals Inc. He was Technical Manager in Pigments and Magnetic Oxides. In all, Joe worked for 30 years until retirement.
In his younger years, Joe enjoyed bowling and working in his darkroom. He excelled in B&W photography, winning several amateur awards for his photographs. In early retirement, he could be found at the Y swimming laps in the pool. Later he could be found at his laptop keeping up to date with financial news, stalking his children and other family members on Facebook and doing Pfizer research.
He enjoyed checking in with high school friends around the country. He continued his father's tradition of gardening throughout his life, producing a tonnage in various types of tomatoes.
Joseph M. Nunes was a member of St. Anthony of Padua, Roman Catholic Church in Easton.
Surviving Joe is daughter, Nina M. Keich and her spouse, Robert G. Keich of Hellertown; son, Joseph A. and spouse, Mary Ellen (O'Connor) Nunes of Palmer Township; and two grandchildren, Ryan M. McCarthy and Kathryn A. Nunes. Joe was predeceased in death by his loving wife, Eleanor and daughter, Deborah.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp.) An additional calling hour will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 8:00 am until 9:15 am at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Ninth and Lehigh Streets, Easton, PA. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, William Penn Hwy, Easton, PA. Memorial contributions may be made in Joseph's name to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
