Obituary

Name: Louis W. Cardell, 86 of Palmer Twp. passed away Monday June 1, 2009 in St. Lukes Hospital, Fountain Hill. Born: He was born on November 7, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA a son of the late Louis and Mary Czarniecki Cardell. Personal: Louis was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy E. (Schneck) Cardell in 2004. He was employed as a teacher for Wilson Area School District retiring in 1983. Louis served in the US Marines during WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient. He served on the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier in a Marine detachment when the Doolittle Raid was launched on April 18, 1942; it was the first air raid by the US to strike the Japanese home island of Honshu during WWII. He served on board the Hornet until later that year when it was attacked and subsequently sunk in October of 1942 during the battle of Santa Cruz Islands. Memberships: He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Palmer Twp. Survivors: Louis is survived by sons Thomas and wife Ruthann Cardell with whom he resided, David J. Cardell and a granddaughter Kathryn R. Cardell. Services: Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6:00pm until 8:00pm and Thursday from 8:30am until 9:30am in the Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas St. Palmer Twp. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am in the church; 4049 Hartley Ave. Palmer Twp. Interment will be private.
