Monsignor Sami Hayek, 91, of Lebanon (formerly of Easton) passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at the home of the Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Kfarmasshoun, Lebanon, where he served as Chaplain. He was born in Bejjeh, Lebanon on December 26, 1929, a son of the late Youssef and Chafica (El Hajj) Hayek. Msgr. Hayek was ordained a priest in 1959. His first assignment was teaching at the Maronite Patriarchal Seminar in Ghazir, Lebanon. Msgr. Hayek served in two parishes in Beirut before being transferred to the United States by then-Maronite Patriarch Paul Peter Meouchi. His first assignment was in Lawrence, MA as Assistant Pastor at St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, followed by ministries in Danbury, CT and New Castle, PA, as Pastor at the Maronite churches there. In 1980, he was named Pastor and Administrator of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church in Easton, PA, where he served for nearly three decades, until his retirement in 2006. While serving as Pastor in Easton, he was ordained a Monsignor in 1994 by Bishop Francis Zayek. After his retirement, he served at the Maronite Mission in Las Vegas, NV before moving back to his native Lebanon as a Chaplain at the missionary, where he offered daily Mass and ministered to the youth who also lived there. Msgr. Hayek took being a parish Priest very seriously. He once said of the priesthood, "It is something we cannot take our eyes off for a second; to be always on the alert for the protection of souls. I tried to make that my priority." But amidst all his seriousness, he always made time to cheer on his favorite football and baseball teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his sister, Jeannette Chartouni of Danbury, CT and her children, Christine and Sami. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Toufic Hayek and his brother-in-law, Edward Chartouni. Msgr. Hayek will be remembered at a Divine Liturgy at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, 4 ^th and Ferry Streets, Easton, PA on Sunday, June 6, 2021, at 10:00am. Contributions in Msgr.
