Richard C. Kaniper, 89, of Easton, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2020 in his home with his wife and beloved dogs by his side.
Richard was born in Phillipsburg, NJ, a son of the late Charles and Ethel (McFall) Kaniper.
Richard was married to Dawn (Ehly) Kaniper. They celebrated 42 years of marriage last September. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from East Stroudsburg, and his Master's Degree in Education from Temple. Richard served in the US Navy during the Korean War as 2 nd Class Aerial Photographer stationed in French Morocco. He was a teacher at Shull Jr. High School, Easton Jr. High School, and Shawnee Intermediate School where he taught Government and American History for 32 years although as many will remember, usually the first stories he told were about his "hobby" of driving tractor trailers after school.
Richard was a member of the Easton Lodge, No. 152, F & A M (formerly Dallas Lodge No. 396) for 68 years where he served as Pursivant for several years. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Richard held life memberships in the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania Education Association. He was a member of the Easton Area Education Association where he served on the Representative Council and the Negotiations Team. He was active in his community, serving as Chairman of the Planning Commission of Williams Township for many years before retiring.
Richard was an animal lover and will be missed by Clyde and Cooper. He was a craftsman and enjoyed doing wood working and taking care of all things around the house. Richard enjoyed traveling around the world, spending much time in Northern Ireland with friends and collecting National Park and Monument stamps with his wife as they travelled the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Richard will be forever loved and cherished by his wife Dawn; his daughter Marcia and husband James Loebsack, his son Sean and wife Cheri, and his daughter Erin and husband Mark Calamari; five grandchildren, Lauren Calamari and Kyle, Brett, Justin and Aidan Kaniper; nephew Richard Smith and Erna, godchildren Ian and Keith Davis and his many friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Gertrude Smith, and a grandson Austin Calamari.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp), followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Interment will be in Raubsville Cemetery, Williams Twp.
