Obituary

Teresa Paula Scalzo, 47, of Alexandria VA and formerly of Easton, PA passed away Monday, May 23, 2016 after her courageous battle with cancer. Teresa spent her final days surrounded by her family and friends. Born January 22, 1969 she was the daughter of Marie (Stefano) and the late Carl John Scalzo. Teresa was a 1986 graduate of Easton Area High School, graduated from Trinity College Hartford in 1990 and received her Juris Doctorate from Temple University School of Law in 1993 where she graduated Cum Laude. At the time of her death, Teresa was the Deputy Director at Navy JAG Trial Assistance Program where she served as the Navys expert on sexual assault prosecution. Previously Teresa served as the Policy Advisor for Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, The Director of the National Center for the Prosecution of Violence Against Women and was the Chief of Sex Crimes Unit with the Northampton County District Attorneys Office. Teresa has advanced the prosecution of violence against women in the United States by supervising the creation of the National Institute on the Prosecution of Domestic Violence and the National Institute on the Prosecution of Sexual Violence. She also designed the curricula for Sexual Assault Trial Advocacy and Evidence Based Prosecution for the National Advocacy Center and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Advanced Training for Judge Advocate General Officers for the Department of Defense. Teresa was recently affiliated with the following: Expert committee member on the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission Board of Directors for Sexual Assault Report, Civic Research Institute Board of Directors for Domestic Violence, Civic Research Institute Member, National Sexual Violence Resource Center Sexual Assault Response Team Member, Steering Committee for the American Bar Associations Translating Training into Legal Practice Member, National Juvenile Justice CenterAwards: Maryland Writers Association, Great Beginnings, Mainstream Category for her novel Silenced Voices End Violence Against Women, International Visionary Award Allied Professional Award for Outstanding Commitment to Victims ServicesTeresa is survived by her Mother Marie, her Brother Carl his wife Theresa and was the beloved aunt to Brett, Paige and Maggie. She is also survived by her Aunts Grace, Josephine Cookie and Barbara, her Uncles Joseph and John as well as many cousins. Teresa also leaves behind many supportive friends affectionately referred to as Team Scalzo who lovingly stood by her side during her battle with cancer. She also leaves behind her beloved dog Ginger.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton PA (Palmer Twp). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 am in St. Roccos Catholic Church, 6658 School Street, Martins Creek, PA. Interment will be in St. Anthonys Cemetery, Williams Twp., PA. Additionally a celebration of life service will be held at Christ Church, 118 N. Washington St, Alexandria, VA on Friday June 10, 2016 at 11:00am.
