Obituary

Thomas C. Sweeney, 94, of Palmer Township, died Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Born October 15, 1922, in Hazleton, PA. He was the son of the late John A. and Sophia Gregory Sweeney. Thomas graduated from Hazleton High School in 1941, where he played varsity basketball and baseball, and served as class president. Thomas served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in Europe from 1941-1945. A graduate of Bucknell University, he played collegiate basketball at Bucknell, as well as semi-professional basketball for the Sunbury Mercury team. Thomas dedicated his life to teaching and coaching youth and scholastic sports in Hazleton and Easton. He retired from Easton Area High School in 1985, where he worked as an English teacher, head varsity basketball coach, and ticket manager for the athletics department. Prior to that he taught and coached in Hazle Township High School. In 2013 he was inducted into the Hazleton Athletic Hall of Fame. Thomas was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret Ferry Sweeney in 2007, and their son, Thomas C. Sweeney, Jr., in 1975, two brothers, William Sweeney and James Sweeney, and two sisters, Marie Iffert and Bernadine Scalleat.
