September 8, 1955 – November 25, 2022
Timothy E. Doherty, 67, of Easton, formerly of Bridgewater, NJ passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 8, 1955 to the late Patrick and Helen (Hartman) Doherty. Timothy graduated in 1973 from Bridgewater Raritan West High School. He then earned his Bachelor's Degree in English from Rowan University in 1977. He worked for over twelve years as VP and Communications Director for New Jersey Bankers before becoming ill in 2014. Timothy served as a eucharistic minister for St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church.
In 1975, he began working with the Sussex Warren Resource Conservation and Development project in Newton, NJ to determine the feasibility of approximately 130 miles of abandoned railroads being converted to rail trails spanning two counties. Timothy developed an award-winning multimedia slide show as well as an inventory and map of the abandoned railroads. In 1977, he left the RC&D program and organized the not-for-profit Recycling Railroad organization which pursued similar goals until 1983. Timothy was a visionary, a pioneer and was extremely dedicated to the concept of converting these abandoned railheads to multiuse trails. As of 2022, about 70 miles of these abandoned railheads have been put into public ownership and are used for trails. He was a freelance writer for the Star Ledger.
